SERGIO CÁRDENAS: I hear the light beat, / Music for baritone, B-Clarinet, Viola and Doublebass. Poems by Octavio Paz.

Review of the concert given on January 28, 2001, in Nürnberg, Germany.

„The surprise of the evening, however, was Cárdenas himself: as a composer. The Octavio Paz poem cycle OIGO LATIR LA LUZ (I hear the light beat), set to music by Cárdenas, must be simply described as sensational. In this manner, more or less, must have resound in the ears of Schubert's friends his WINTERREISE (Winter Journey): something familiar and at the same time incredibly distant. Each song with its own primeval character without trying to be ostentiously toady. Everything is insinuated (Quarter-Notes descriptively marching, memories of walzes, a short Fugato, even a Doublebass Jazz-Combo), just to put a veil on it immediately after. To all this, the bariton voice of Mathias Vieweg, that floats with no special effort up to the falsetto registers: one can hardly immagine poetry can turn into sound in a more consistent manner than the one here referred to.“ (Benjamin Wron, on January 30, 2001, in the Nürnberger Nachrichten).
